A fixture of Salem's downtown area, Salem Common is a scenic recreation area that has been considered public land since the 17th century. Once a site for shooting practice livestock grazing, today it is a hub for community gatherings, including performances, festivals, and other events. It occupies eight acres in the heart of town, within walking distance of such attractions as the Peabody Essex Museum, and the House of the Seven Gables.
