Known best for its use in Nathaniel Hawthorne's seminal novel of the same name, the House of the Seven Gables is a Colonial mansion with elaborate Georgian paneling and original beams and rafters. Now a non-profit museum, the house features tours of its wood-paneled rooms, double-sash windows, and period furnishings; the house was owned by relatives of Hawthorne, and the author's birthplace resides next door. It lies along Derby Wharf, near Salem Common.
